The film crew of Spartan Films wrapped up production for their feature debut with a war scene that takes place in Afghanistan. Stay tuned for the release of Fair Is Fair. That is, of course, when the lazy editor (moi) gets off his ass and finishes post-production.

I had the amazing opportunity to begin my ‘acting’ career as a CIA special ops guy. Of course I had to document the shoot. I mean, what else would I be doing…? Combat Camera, here I come! Everyone worked so hard to make this happen and the result will be nothing less than astonishing.

Tight But Loose, the UK based magazine that has been recording the life of Led Zeppelin since 1978, published some of my shots of John Paul Jones in the #TBL25 issue. When Them Crooked Vultures, the supergroup featuring John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl and Josh Homme, came to rock the 9:30 Club I was there to make sure that those who couldn’t get tickets to the sold out show could get some visuals of these masters of rock doing their magic.

The Roots

It’s no surprise that The Roots filled the 930 Club to capacity two nights in a row because they just kick ass. The highlight of the performance was when they played a 25 minute long You Got Me that made tangents into such covers as Sweet Child Of Mine and Immigrant Son among many others. What a great wrap-up to the year and the decade. If my word isn’t good enough then hear it from ?uestlove himself.

Howl At The Moon Pt. 2: Snowed In

Never have I felt more comfortable and for that matter more protected standing in the middle of a busy street of downtown Burke. Normally would I only dare attack this stretch of pavement to venture to the Bowl America conveniently located across the street from my house. What people from Michigan would call a dusting, DC/VA/MD folk deemed a blizzard and thus demonstrated their wondrous driving skills by filling the road-side ditches with their sedans and SUVs. And there you a have it. A once busy street became my safest pedestrian walkway.

Howl At The Moon Pt. 1

It takes a certain something in the air help paint a pretty picture of the city. Let’s face it. Baltimore catches a lot flak for a lot of things. But I say consider the source. My last trip up there was amazing. I was in good company and the misty air on a mid October night was one of the highlights of 2009. Strolling away from Sonar and eventually finding ourselves at the Inner Harbor debating which entry we wanted to break first.

Bentzen Balled To Death

The summer was just the beginning with Summer Camp pool parties. Not even two months later BYT struck back with the Bentzen Ball, a 4 day long comedy festival injecting a new kind of excitement into the 14th and U Street like it’s never seen before. All of the main venues hosted stand-up comics from all over the country. Some of them you might have heard of – Patton Oswalt, Todd Barry, and Mary Lynn Rajskub to name a few. If you weren’t at Lincoln Theatre, Black Cat, or Bohemian Caverns you were in the wrong place. You gotta hand it to BYT for once again doing good for the city with the help of Tig Notaro, who was instrumental in rallying the talent together and kicking off the opening night at Lincoln Theatre. Any festival isn’t complete without special appearances. Caught floating around were Ian MacKaye and Mathew Lesko.

March Down Rainbow Road

More than 100,000 people (gay & straight) from around the country converged on the U.S. Capitol for the National Equality March. They came out to express their growing vexation with the inaction from Congress to tackle a slew of gay issues. If it wasn’t obvious enough, on the top of that list was the matter of gay hitchin’. Of course, any rally certainly won’t have any impact if there isn’t at least one celebrity around to give it some importance. To grip the attention of the TV-watching couch potato American, Lady Gaga and Cynthia Nixon were present to help reinforce the message.

Sunny Day Reminiscence

The Sunny Day Real Estate show filled the 930 Club to capacity with long time followers from the DC area. A sold-out show comes as no big surprise seeing as how the band, in their second reunion, brought back all original members. And the District fans showed their appreciation by sipping drinks and singing along to all the songs that brought back memories of teenage angst.

I have to say, the staff of the 930 Club sets the standard for professionalism and fairness towards photographers. However, on rare occasions I encounter some trouble negotiating a photo pass and entry into the club with my gear. But no matter how many angles I need to sort out at the guest list booth it eventually works out – somehow. This occurrence took a little longer than it has in the past and I didn’t get inside until half way through the first band’s set. Now I had to fight through a thick crowd, thus I had more trouble securing a good place in the front row. Just inches away from being able to touch the lip of the stage I met a super friendly patron, Nick Kessler, who also happens to be a photographer. After a friendly exchange he had no problems with me using his prime real estate for the first three songs so I could get my shots.

Moby

I remember growing up in Germany and being surrounded by Rave, Techno, and all kinds of electronic music and never really understanding the difference between the various subcategories. To be honest my grasp of that genre hasn’t changed much since then. When I caught wind of Moby coming to the 930 Club I knew I had to be there. My brain was racing with childhood memories of listening such classics as Feeling So Real and Go, and I arrived at the club anxious to hear the classics.
Having gone through years of maturity Moby has moved more and more away from performing by himself to filling the stage with a full band. On this Friday night playing a late show he started off with four slow tracks until moving into what he described as a somewhat silly and ridiculous dance tune known as Bodyrock. That’s more like the Moby everyone was expecting. Now, me personally being a Jason Bourne fan I had my expectations met with Extreme Ways.
